JOANNA CONRAD - Executive DIRECTOR, YOUTH DIVERSION
Joanna is the Executive Director of Youth Diversion, a not-for-profit agency that works with at-risk youth, encouraging young people to strengthen themselves so that they may in turn, strengthen their futures.
She received her Honours Degree in Law & Society at York University and has over ten years’ experience working within the criminal justice field in various capacities.
Joanna, a native of the Greater Toronto Area, began working with Youth Diversion in 2009, starting out as a Youth Justice Case Manager and moving on to become Executive Director two years later.
Youth Diversion, a not for profit organization, has successfully served thousands of young people ages 12 - 17 across Windsor and Essex County through effective community-based programs for youth since its incorporation in 1980.
Historically, Youth Diversion (YD) served youth in conflict with the law however Joanna saw a need in the community for a preventative programming for youth and as a result of her efforts, YD began delivering service to all youth in the community through the Outreach Program, a preventative strategy aimed to address youth who are exhibiting at-risk behaviours, such as poor attendance in school and/or showing signs of dropping out of school, poor familial interactions, unhealthy peer interactions and low self-esteem to name a few.
In addition to her day job, Joanna teaches three courses in the Community Justice Services Program at St. Clair College, an opportunity that allows her to embark her experiences onto her students with the intent to engage them to think outside the box, particularly when it comes to Restorative Justice and the most effective ways in working with youth who offend.
Joanna is also a strong advocate for people with Down syndrome and is active in the community providing presentations advocating for those who have Down syndrome or love someone who does. She is an active volunteer with the John McGivney Centre on their Family Advisory Network, and sits on the St. Clair College Community Justice Services Program Advisory Committee as well as the Prince Andrew Public School Student Advisory Council.
Passionate about providing preventative services to youth, Joanna is continuously working to progress her vision for the programs and services offered through Youth Diversion for youth throughout Windsor and Essex County.
